The role being assessed
A technical manager is judged on decisions rather than tasks. It is one thing to know how a footing is dug; it is another to decide what to do when the trench base is softer at one end than the other, or when the ground conditions on site do not match the design assumption.
Preparation for this role should therefore weight application, defect diagnosis and sequencing more heavily than definitions.
Where technical managers are most often caught out
Across the competency areas, the recurring themes are less about memorised values and more about consequence:
- Recognising that differential settlement, not settlement itself, is what damages a structure
- Knowing why mortar should not be stronger than the units it beds
- Reading a crack pattern to distinguish ground movement from thermal or shrinkage movement
- Understanding why an inspection must happen before work is covered, not after
- Knowing when a change in ground conditions invalidates a design and must go back to the designer
How to prepare for a judgement-based assessment
Work through application and defect-diagnosis questions and, for each one, articulate the mechanism before checking the answer. If you can explain why the wrong options are wrong, you understand the principle rather than the answer.
