Most people preparing for a technical assessment start by reading everything, which is slow and hard to sustain. A better sequence is to test first, find the gaps, study the gaps, then re-test.

Step one — diagnose before you study
Sit a practice test cold, before any revision. The result is not a judgement, it is a map. It tells you which of the nine competency areas need work and which are already sound.
Step two — study by competency, not by page
Work one competency area at a time and focus on the reasoning: why a foundation is taken below the seasonal moisture zone, why mortar is usually weaker than the units it beds, why a drain can block when the gradient is too steep as well as too shallow. Understanding the mechanism is what survives pressure.
- Foundations and excavation — bearing, founding depth, soil behaviour and settlement
- Brickwork and blockwork — bonding, mortar, cavity walls, ties and movement
- Concrete and reinforcement — hydration, curing, cover, compaction and defects
- Damp-proofing and waterproofing — barriers, continuity, bridging and roof detailing
- Roofing and roof structure — trusses, bracing, wind uplift, coverings and ventilation
- Drainage and plumbing — gradients, traps, ventilation, access and stormwater
- Finishes, plaster and screeds — bond, substrate preparation and shrinkage
- Quality control and defects — inspection, diagnosis, remedial work and records
- Site practice and sequence — setting out, temporary works and construction order
Step three — spaced re-testing
Return to a topic several days after studying it rather than immediately. Recalling something after a gap builds far more durable knowledge than re-reading it while it is still fresh.
Step four — rehearse
Close with a mock assessment under realistic conditions, and treat anything you got wrong as your final revision list.
