Common Technical Mistakes
Technical questions are often lost through avoidable reading and checking errors rather than a complete lack of construction knowledge. Use this guide to identify habits that cost marks and replace them with a calmer assessment method.

Read the full question
Do not select an answer after reading only the first line. Look for qualifiers such as most appropriate, first, safest, except, not or best, because they change what the question is asking.
Check units, conversions and dimensions
Keep millimetres, metres, square units and cubic units distinct. Write a short conversion down when needed, and check that a dimension or quantity belongs to the element described rather than a nearby line or note.
Slow down answer selection
Choosing the first familiar phrase can hide a more precise option. Read every option, eliminate answers that contradict the question or basic construction logic, and choose the remaining answer that directly addresses the stated problem.
Keep safety and sequence in view
Do not ignore an obvious safety implication because the question appears technical. Also check the construction sequence: an answer that requires an element to be installed, inspected or protected before the preceding work is complete may be the wrong option.
Separate materials and terminology
Similar terms are not interchangeable. Check whether the question refers to a material, component, process, defect or control, and do not substitute a familiar material or construction term without checking its actual function.
Use drawings and revise weak areas
When a drawing is included, identify its view, scale, units, dimensions and notes before interpreting it. After practice, revise weak competency areas instead of repeating only the questions you already know.
Assessment-day checklist
Before submitting an answer, check:
- I read the complete question and noticed any qualifier.
- I checked the units, conversion and relevant dimension.
- I considered safety and the correct construction sequence.
- I eliminated options that are clearly inconsistent.
- I used the drawing legend, notes or view correctly where provided.
- I kept moving and returned to uncertain questions only after answering the clear ones.
- I changed an answer only because a specific re-check showed a reason to change it.
