Concrete Quality and Curing Guide for Contractors
Concrete site controls explained: approved mix, preparation, reinforcement, placement, compaction, curing, testing and defect escalation.
Prepare before the truck arrives
Confirm the approved mix, quantity, access, equipment, labour, weather plan, formwork, reinforcement, cover, cleanliness and inspection release. Placement should not begin while critical checks remain unresolved.
Protect the designed mix
Uncontrolled water addition changes the water-cement ratio and can reduce quality. Delivery information and any authorised adjustment should be recorded.
Place and compact systematically
Avoid segregation, uncontrolled free fall and cold joints. Compact sufficiently to remove trapped air without displacing reinforcement or overworking the mix.
Cure deliberately
Curing protects moisture and temperature conditions needed for strength development. Start at the appropriate time, maintain the specified method and protect fresh concrete from early loading and damage.
Respond to defects with evidence
Honeycombing, cracking, dimensional error or suspect strength must be recorded and assessed. Do not hide a defect with cosmetic repair before its cause and significance have been determined.
