Start with the site and approved design
Foundation decisions depend on the approved design, site classification, soil conditions, loads and local constraints. Never treat a generic dimension as universally suitable.
Set out and verify
Establish reliable control points, check boundaries and dimensions, confirm corners and diagonals, and record approval before excavation. A small setting-out error can multiply through the entire structure.
Inspect founding conditions
The base should be undisturbed, suitable and consistent with the design assumptions. Loose, wet, filled or unexpectedly variable material must be referred for competent assessment before concrete is placed.
Control water and concrete work
Prevent water from softening excavations, keep trenches clean, check reinforcement and service penetrations, and verify concrete placement and curing. Photographs should show scale, location and date.
Record concealed work
Use inspection requests, checklists, concrete delivery records, test results where specified and signed hold-point releases. Evidence is especially valuable once the foundation is covered.
